Tomris Ozben and other expert speakers at Labquality Days 2023

We are incredibly honoured to welcome a selection of international experts to speak at Labquality Days 2023. The theme of quality in laboratory covers a wide range of exciting topics, from measurement uncertainty to interpretative EQA and green laboratories.

Tomris Ozben
President of EFLM, President-Elect of IFCC, Turkey
EuSpLM, PhD, D.Sc., Med. Lab. Specialist Prof.

Dr Tomris Ozben is the President of the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) and President-Elect of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC). She is the Chair of the EFLM Task Force-Green and Sustainable Laboratories (TF-GSL). She is on the Board of Directors of the IFCC Foundation for Emerging Nations (FEN).

Over her tenure at Akdeniz University, Prof. Ozben has been the Vice-Rector, General Director of the Central Laboratory of the University Hospital, Chair of the Dept. of Medical Biochemistry, and Ethical Committee member of Clinical studies. She is a supervisor for the Doctorate Program entitled “Clinical and Experimental Medicine” at the Medical Faculty, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy. She is an external examiner for the Post-graduate Master and PhD education at the University of Zimbabwe, College of Health Sciences, Department of Chemical Pathology.

She is an Honorary Member of the Slovak Society of Clinical Biochemistry (SSCB) and the Italian Society of Clinical Chemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology (SIBioC). She works in identifying early diagnostic and prognostic markers in cancer, acute and chronic diseases, liquid profiling in cancer, validation of new tests, and laboratory management. She is the Editorial Board member of several Scientific Journals. She has published over 180 papers, edited several books, and been invited to speak at more than 200 international conferences.

At Labquality Days 2023, Dr Ozben will open the congress with a few welcoming words as well as give a lecture on the implementation of sustainable practices in medical laboratories.

Sverre Sandberg
Professor, Noklus, Norway
MD, PhD, Specialist in Biological Chemistry

Professor Sverre Sandberg is the director of the Norwegian Quality Improvement of Laboratory examinations (NOKLUS) and the Norwegian Porphyria Center (NAPOS). He has been chair of the Committee on Evidence-Based Laboratory Medicine in IFCC, president of the European Organization for External Quality Assurance Providers in Laboratory Medicine (EQALM), president of the European Federation of Clinical chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, EFLM and board member of IFCC.

He is currently the president of the European Porphyria Network Association (EPNET) and chair of the council of International cooperation for harmonisation of clinical laboratory results (ICHCLR). He is chair of the EFLM TG of the biological variation database. He has written more than 450 papers in peer-reviewed journals, written book chapters and has given lectures in porphyria, evidence-based laboratory medicine, quality improvement of point-of-care instruments, biological variation, and analytical performance specifications.

At Labquality Days 2023, Sverre Sandberg will be giving a lecture titled From measurement uncertainty to diagnostic uncertainty – can EQA be of value? When is measurement important in relation to the overall uncertainty of medical decisions?

Rita Selby
Associate Professor, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Medicine, University of Toronto, Canada
MBBS, FRCP(C), MSc.

Dr Rita Selby is a haematologist specialising in thrombosis and hemostasis, and the medical director for two regional reference coagulation laboratories at both the University Health Network and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, two quaternary care academic teaching hospitals fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. She is an Associate Professor in the departments of Laboratory Medicine & Medicine at the University of Toronto.

Her research interests include coagulation laboratory quality assurance, appropriate utilization of laboratory testing and pragmatic clinical trials in anticoagulation and thromboembolism. She has served on the scientific committees of national and international laboratory external quality assurance providers. She is currently the co-chair of the Test Review and Utilization Committee (TRUC), an advisory committee to the Laboratories and Diagnostics Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Health.

She is the editor/author of the popular coagulation handbook, Bloody easy: Coagulation Simplified used for coagulation education across Canada. She has developed and taught the mandatory coagulation laboratory curriculum for the University of Toronto Hematology and Hematopathology residency program trainees since 2009.

At Labquality Days 2023, Rita Selby will be giving a lecture on D-dimers and the clinical impact of measurement uncertainty on the certainty of diagnosis.

Piet Meijer
PhD, Director
ECAT Foundation, the Netherlands

Piet Meijer is the director of the ECAT Foundation, a non-profit global provider of external quality control in the field of thrombosis and haemostasis. He is a member of several national and international societies in the field of thrombosis and haemostasis and external quality assessment. He is an expert member of the EQALM/EFLM Post-Analytical Working Group.

He chairs the ICSH (International Committee of Standardization in Haematology) guideline group on Factor VIII and IX inhibitors. He is an International advisor for the ProMeQuaLab project (quality improvement in medical laboratories in Portuguese-speaking developing countries). He is a member of the IFCC Working Group on PT/INR Standardization.

Piet Meijer is also a member of the Scientific Advisory board for Labquality Days. He has contributed to more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, given numerous amounts of lectures at a variety of congresses and is, as a lecturer, involved in several national and international educational programmes.

At Labquality Days 2023, Piet Meijer will be talking about examples from case studies in thrombosis and bleeding disorders.
